Fans of Anita Shreve will likely devour this new novel from the author of A Change in Altitude and The Pilot?s Wife. EMT Peter Webster is so smitten with Sheila, a beautiful yet deeply damaged young woman he encounters at the scene of a drunk-driving accident, that he marries her soon after. Care to guess how that turns out? The narrative, which jumps back and forth between their marriage and the years during which Webster raises their daughter on his own, is compelling. It?s too bad that the most intriguing character — the tough-talking Sheila — remains a mystery not just to Webster but to the reader as well. B
