'The Simpsons' renewed for 23rd season

The Simpsons has been renewed for an additional season — the Fox series’ 23rd, to be exact. The animated favorite will remain on the air until at least spring 2012, and will celebrate its 500th episode between now and then. The only other series in history to have produced more episodes thus far are Lassie — which aired 588 shows — and Gunsmoke, which aired 635 episodes. “Like many 22-year-olds, The Simpsons is extremely happy remaining at home, on Fox, and hopes it doesn’t have to go out into the real world for many years to come,” executive producer Al Jean said in a statement.
