James Wall, who played neighbor Mr. Baxter on the children’s show Captain Kangaroo, died Wednesday after a short illness in New York City, according to the AP. He was 92. Wall began at the popular show in 1962 as a stage manager, but presuaded the producers to let him be the show’s first black character in 1968. After he ended working on Kangaroo, Wall continued his stage manager work at CBS for many years, working on programs ranging from CBS Evening News and 60 Minutes to NFL Today and Face the Nation. One of his roles as stage manager was to count down the seconds until air for Walter Cronkite and Dan Rather.
