Christopher McQuarrie, Oscar-winning screenwriter of The Usual Suspects, has been approached to pen a sequel to the 1986 Tom Cruise blockbuster Top Gun, a rep for the writer confirms to, though no deal is in place. (The news was first reported by New York Magazine.) Paramount Pictures hasn’t yet confirmed that it is making a Top Gun sequel.

A source with knowledge of the situation tells EW that Cruise’s 1980s flyboy character Maverick would likely be the main character in any script McQuarrie writes for a sequel. McQuarrie’s rep would not comment on that claim.
