The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced today in a statement that the 84th Academy Awards in 2012 “will not be significantly earlier than the now-traditional last Sunday in February.” The announcement comes after quite public speculation that the Academy might move the 2012 Oscars to as early as late January, in an effort to remain relevant in the face of the extended glut of awards shows that precede the Academy Awards. The Academy’s Board of Governors, however, did not rule out moving the ceremony in ensuing years, noting “the Academy’s staff and Board will continue to evaluate the advantages and challenges associated with such a change.” The 83rd Oscars will air on ABC on Sunday, Feb. 27, 2011.
