The second season opens with the mighty blowhard Kenny Powers (Danny McBride) in Mexico, his trademark mullet knitted into cornrows, at a cockfight. The former baseball legend has a bird in the game. It’s just his way of escaping the heartache left behind in North Carolina. This portrait of a profane, low-down egomaniac—excuse me, he prefers “Christ figure” —continues to amaze. McBride’s willingness to play depression, amorality, and selfishness for laughs is awesome. A-
