Imagine Michael Scott in India, and that’s essentially the vision exec producer Ken Kwapis (The Office) has for Outsourced. The series follows Todd (Ben Rappaport), who has relocated to Mumbai to run a call center for kitschy American novelties. Culture-clash comedy definitely plays a big role. ”The sexual-harassment video is actually more explicit than Bollywood movies,” says Rappaport, ”because there’s kissing.” But Kwapis dismisses concerns that the show’s humor — which features jokes about turbans and the gastrointestinal effects of Indian food — drifts too far into stereotype territory. ”The characters are people you recognize,” he says. ”Whether it’s a paper company in Scranton or a call center in Mumbai, an office is an office.” SEPT. 23
