Brace yourself for some earthshaking comedy in season 2: Our gang will be rocked by a minor quake! ”It sends Manny [Rico Rodriguez] into an existential crisis that Jay [Ed O’Neill] has to help him with,” says coexec producer Dan O’Shannon, ”but Jay has some questions of his own.” In that same episode, Nathan Lane guest-stars as Pepper, a flamboyant friend of Cameron (Eric Stonestreet) and Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson). ”Pepper is known for throwing fancifully themed brunches that require the guests to dress in costumes,” says O’Shannon. ”This time, he’s having the ‘Oscar Wilde and Crazy Brunch.’ ” Also on the menu for the Emmy-winning comedy this season: Gloria (Sofia Vergara) finds herself becoming rather competitive with Manny’s new girlfriend; Claire (Julie Bowen) and Phil (Ty Burrell) must figure out how to do damage control after — AWKWARD ALERT! — their children discover them in the throes of passion; and Haley (Sarah Hyland) and her dim boyfriend, Dylan (Reid Ewing), decide to call it quits. ”We don’t know yet if it will be a lasting thing or temporary, but the one who seems to be hurt most of all is Phil,” notes O’Shannon. ”He really misses Dylan, in his own way.” SEPT. 22
