Attention all Bruce Springsteen diehards: Come Nov. 16, you’ll be “waiting for a moment that just don’t come” no longer. That’s when the deluxe reissue of Springsteen’s seminal 1978 album Darkness on the Edge of Town, a project that’s been years in the making, will finally arrive. And The Promise: The Darkness on the Edge of Town Story, whose existence was confirmed via press release today, sounds even cooler than we’d dared imagine.

The package will include six discs — three CDs and three DVDs or BluRays. The first CD is a remastered version of the original Darkness album, which would be pretty sweet in and of itself. Then come two more discs of unreleased rarities from that album’s recording sessions. This includes an “extraordinary rock version of ‘Racing in the Street,'” as well as the E Street Band’s recordings of songs like “Because the Night” and “Fire,” which Springsteen penned for other artists, and plenty of other unheard gems.

On to the DVDs/BluRays! One is The Promise, the previously announced 90-minute documentary on the making of Darkness that will air on HBO this October. Another is an HD recording of a 2009 Asbury Park performance where the E Street Band played Darkness in its entirety with no audience. (I saw a similar Darkness show at Giants Stadium last fall. It was awesome.) That second disc also collects a grab-bag of 1976-1978 concert performances from Springsteen’s archives. Finally, the third DVD/BluRay is a full 26-song concert the band played in Houston on 1978’s legendary Darkness tour. There’s also an 80-page notebook with reproductions of Springsteen’s personal notes from the Darkness recording sessions, plus a newly written essay by the Boss himself.

If all that sounds like too much Darkness to handle, Columbia Records will release a scaled-back two-CD version on the same day, with just the two discs of studio outtakes. But c’mon, you know you want to hear the whole thing.
