STARRING Freida Pinto, Hiam Abbass
WRITTEN BY Rula Jebreal
DIRECTED BY Julian Schnabel
A young Palestinian woman named Miral (Slumdog Millionaire‘s Freida Pinto) grows up in an orphanage in war-torn Jerusalem and becomes involved with Palestinian rights while teaching at a refugee camp. ”It’s not Baby’s Day Out,” jokes Pinto of director Julian Schnabel’s follow-up to 2007’s The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. Though it’s based on Rula Jebreal’s novel of the same name, the film depicts real-life figures such as Hind Husseini (Hiam Abbass), who founded Jerusalem’s Dar Al-Tifel Institute for orphans in 1948. Acting in the film ”really changed me as a person,” Pinto says.
