STARRING Dwayne Johnson, Billy Bob Thornton, Oliver Jackson-Cohen
WRITTEN BY Tony Gayton & Joe Gayton
DIRECTED BY George Tillman Jr.
Dwayne Johnson may have ditched his wrestling moniker, but make no mistake: The Rock has returned. ”A lot of my fans didn’t understand my move into comedy and family films,” he says. ”I stepped away from the action genre to become a better actor, but I’ve been waiting for the right opportunity to get back into it and kick ass all over the screen.” In Faster, Johnson gets to do just that. He plays an ex-con named Driver, who’s just served 10 years for a failed bank heist that left his brother dead. He’s seeking vengeance, of course, but he also has to evade a seasoned cop (Billy Bob Thornton) and a bloodthirsty hitman (newcomer Oliver Jackson-Cohen).
While Faster promises a bounty of fights involving guns, knives, and fists, Driver’s slickest weapon may be his ride: a 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS. Director George Tillman Jr. (Men of Honor) eschewed CG effects in favor of using — and demolishing — actual cars, and Johnson ended up performing many of the maneuvers himself. ”It was very cool getting behind a classic car like that and driving it 90 miles per hour right into the camera,” says Johnson. ”I humbly can tell you that I’m the best driver on the planet.” Sounds like something the Rock would say.
