As the next installment in Daniel Craig’s super-spy saga sits idle waiting for the cash-strapped MGM to sort through its financial woes, Chris Nolan told the audience at last night’s London premiere of his new film, Inception, that he would love to do a Bond film. According to the BBC, the big-budget visionary said, “I’ve loved the Bond films since I was a kid. For me, they’re always about the expansiveness of cinema. The first Bond films set up infinite possibilities of about the world they create. I’d love to do a Bond film.”

Putting aside the fact that Sam Mendes (American Beauty) has been attached to direct the next Bond film, how awesome would it be to see a guy like Nolan — someone who we already know can push the boundaries of action spectacle — tackle the franchise? Maybe he could give Bond amnesia à la Memento, or load it with truly unexpected twists and turns like in The Prestige, or better yet, finally give the series a really kick-ass villain again — someone like Heath Ledger’s Joker from The Dark Knight? Come to think of it, this could be exactly what it takes to not only goose the nearly-50-year-old franchise, but get its struggling studio back on its feet again.

Of course, all of this could wind up leading to nothing. But it’s fun to think about, right? After all, us Bond fans could use some good news. What do you think, is a Chris Nolan Bond something you’d want to see? And if not, who would do it better? Quentin Tarantino, Ridley Scott, the Wachowskis, Darren Aronofsky?
