STARRING Jaden Smith, Jackie Chan and Taraji P. Henson
WRITTEN BY CHRISTOPHER MURPHEY
DIRECTED BY Harald Zwart

Remaking a beloved movie is always treacherous, but Jackie Chan says he’s not worried about receiving any roundhouse kicks from fans of the original 1984 Karate Kid: ”This movie is totally different. We have our own style.” The 2010 version, rated PG, has its own distinct locale, too, shifting the action to China to follow a young American transplant (Jaden Smith) who gets martial-arts training from a kung-fu master (Chan) so he can defend himself against bullies. The idea initially came from Will Smith, envisioning a potential vehicle for his son Jaden. Showing proper martial-arts respect, Jaden Smith made sure to check in with the original Kid, Ralph Macchio: ”I talked to him over the phone once. He said, ‘This is going to be a good movie. Don’t screw it up.”’
