Mary McDonagh Murphy tells the story of how the quiet, publicity-shy Southerner Harper Lee came to write her classic. She also conducts interviews (which will later be included in a documentary) with famous folks whose childhoods were transformed by the novel, such as Oprah, Tom Brokaw, and Scott Turow. Lee, now 84, didn’t talk — she never does, God bless her — but you come away from Murphy’s book with a renewed amazement at what Lee was able to achieve with a single perfect novel. A-
