'Funny Girl': Should Lea Michele be the new Fanny Brice? (Should anyone?)
Image Credit: Everett CollectionA revival of Funny Girl, the 1964 Broadway show toplined by then-21-year-old Barbra Streisand, will hit Broadway in spring 2012. Producer Bob Boyett and director Bartlett Sher (South Pacific) planned to start the revival with a six-week out-of-town tryout in late 2011, and then move to NYC if all went well. When asked whether the pair would consider Lea Michele — who memorably sang “Don’t Rain on My Parade” in the midseason finale of Glee — to play Babs’ former role, Boyett told the NYT, “I think Lea is wonderful, she’s great, and she would certainly be on anybody’s list. She’s also got a pretty good gig going now,” adding that “we’re open to going with an unknown actress.”
Hypothetically assuming that Rachel Berry and her busy schedule (documented in various Relationship Calendars) would somehow allow Lea Michele to come out and play, would you want to see her as Fanny Brice? If not her, who? Can anyone stand up to Streisand’s legacy?
