According to investigators’ testimony at a National Transportation Safety Board meeting, the plane’s tires exploded as it raced down a South Carolina runway, leading to brake damage and an abortive take-off. The crash killed the plane’s pilot and three others; Barker and DJ AM (born Adam Goldstein), the only survivors, suffered major burns. DJ AM died last year after an accidental drug overdose.
