'Modern Family' recap: Family ties
Image Credit: Danny Feld/ABCTonight’s episode centered on newfound family bonds: Cameron and Gloria bonded over their fabulousness, Manny and Mitchell bonded over their weirdness, and Phil and Luke bonded over their spaciness.
But let’s face it; it was really all about Cameron. While all the family members had their share of funny lines, Cameron was truly en fuego. I could have filled the best quotes of the night just from his zingers alone. Which is the way I like it! Not that I don’t adore each and every one of these lovably dysfunctional extended family members, because I do, but if I had to pick one to take home to watch TV with me every night, it would be Cameron, and second to Cam would be Gloria — which is why this episode was so fantastic. I hope we get to see much more of them together in the future – perhaps lunching and shopping?
The token touching moment of the evening came between Manny and Mitchell, who finally bonded as brothers over being different, their knowledge of astronomy, and, of course, their ridiculous father Jay (gotta love him though).
Not quite as touching but equally chuckle-worthy were Phil and Luke being “diagnosed” with ADHD. “How does lead get in a pencil?” Phil destroying the garage in step with Alex reading the symptoms of ADHD was classic. Like father like son!
And onto the best sound bites of the evening…
“What’s my favorite way to relax? Throw on my wireless headphones and disappear into the Nature Channel.” — Phil
Best Cameron and Mitchell exchanges:
“Tonight is the magnificent Lyrid meteor shower.” — Mitchell
“It’s where the planet geek passes through the nerdyway.” — Cameron
“On paper [Gloria and I] should be good friends, I mean look at us, one spicy, curvy diva –” — Cameron
“– and Gloria.” -Mitchell
“Honestly I with that little tart would go back to Columbia and take her weird little brown friend with her.” — Cameron about Mitchell’s Ivy League friends (but Gloria thinks he’s talking about her and Manny)
“‘Your people’?! What is wrong with me???”– Cameron commenting on his incessant use of “your people” around Gloria
“On your mark, get set, Van Gogh!” — Phil to Luke
“Were you there, Mitchell, because I’m sure I would have recognized the only other white or gay person.” — Cameron about the restaurant that Gloria took him to
“I can spice you under the table any day there, sweet thing. ” — Cameron to Gloria about his ability to handle spicy foods
“If you don’t sweat, you’re not doing it right.” — Manny about his tango class
“Your head is running water. ” — Gloria to Cameron when he starts sweating buckets from his spicy dinner
“There’s a line, Jay.” — Manny to Jay when he goes too far making fun of Mitchell
Jay’s inappropriate comment of the evening: “If you were that type of a gay, you’d probably do all right for yourself.” — Jay to Mitchell about looking good in a dress
“Gloria, I think it’s drivable.” — Cameron about his car with no wheels
“I’m really sorry about not underestimating Luke enough.” — Phil to Claire
So, what did I miss? Are you as excited for Gloria and Cameron’s burgeoning friendship as I am?
Parents just don’t understand… and neither do kids or spouses in this hit ensemble comedy
