Image Credit: Tina Gill/PR PhotosWe’re slightly excitable when it comes to Syfy movies: Mansquito, Hellhounds, Dinoshark... But the idea of an actress we trust to be in on the joke (yet take it seriously) starring in one? Legitimately thrilling. Felicia Day has signed on topline Red. She’ll play a descendant of Little Red Riding Hood who, according to the press release, “brings her fiancé home, where he meets the family and learns about their business — hunting werewolves. He’s skeptical until bitten by a werewolf. When her family insists he must be killed, Red tries saving him.” The film will premiere on Syfy in 2011.
This is a brilliant move: It gets Day, who’s fronted three seasons of her hit web series The Guild, on the small screen in a leading role — and only the people who will “get it” will seek it out, so she’s not shooting herself in the foot for future roles. (Not that I believe she’d actually like to work with someone who wouldn’t see the fun in her starring in a Syfy movie.) For the network, she brings a built-in fanbase that wants to see her play smart, funny, and sexy and that will appreciate that Joss Whedon isn’t the only one who thinks she kicks a little ass.
We hope her contract covers a sequel.
