Based on an informal office poll and an extra-formal poll, I am one of the few people who enjoyed Charlize Theron’s Dior gown last night. The dress has only a 5 percent approval rating in our Rate 20 Dresses Oscars gallery (71 percent of readers voted “Loathe it”; 24 percent said “Meh.”) I loved this dress, Xena breastplates and all. Strong color, simple hair, cool gaze. Sure, the “look, I have boobs” effect is pretty blatant here, but honestly, on Charlize Theron, I think it’s just funny. She’s never been a “look, I have boobs” type — not even remotely. It’d be different if this were a photo of an attention-hungry reality star/D-lister. As it is, this is Charlize Theron in an evening gown. She looks gorgeous. I want cinnamon buns. None of these things is bad. End of story.

Have you ever loved an award-show gown everyone seemed to hate? Which one? And don’t try to convince me Charlize Theron looked stupid. It’s not going to happen.
