Great Moments at the Independent Spirit Awards
Sean Penn, Jodie Foster, Mickey Rourke, and other stars who made an impression at the funky indie filmmaking awards
At the funky Film Independent Spirit Awards, held every year on the beach in Santa Monica the day before the Oscars, only the waiters wear tuxedos. Everyone else shows up in jeans and flip-flops. To celebrate this counterculture tradition honoring achievements in indie filmmaking — the event turns 25 next week — EW remembers Spirit ceremonies past and hands out some trophies of our own.
