Back in November we saw a teaser trailer for Beastly, the edgy teen update of Beauty and the Beast starring Alex Pettyfer, Vanessa Hudgens, and Neil Patrick Harris, based on the young adult novel by Alex Finn. Now, we’re getting a longer, closer look.

• Nice job casting Mary-Kate Olsen as Kendra, the goth classmate that curses cruel, handsome Kyle (Pettyfer) after he humiliates her. She turns him as “aggressively unattractive” on the outside as he is on the inside, which means he goes from James Spader in Pretty in Pink to Eric Bana in Star Trek. Kyle has a year to find someone to love him as is, or he’ll stay like that forever.

• I guess Hudgens (Bandslam) can keep playing the invisible loner girl at school because she’s not blond? This time, she’s Lindy, the classmate Kyle decides to woo. Now, according to the synopsis on the film’s official site, Kyle’s father (Peter Krause!) banishes him to Brooklyn with a sympathetic housekeeper (Lisa Gay Hamilton) and blind tutor (Harris). Kyle sees Lindy’s addict father trying to kill a “threatening drug dealer” — delightful modern twist — and offers to protect Lindy if she comes to stay with them. Thus begins the courtship in earnest, which involves him trying to buy her affection (doesn’t work), then carrying her around on his back like a spider monkey (makes her think of Twilight, we’re guessing), and finally being willing to sacrifice himself to save her from the drug dealer (if we’re interpreting the footage correctly).

• Harris will be a scene-stealer.

• I’m going to see this.
