Hailing from Sunderland, England — birthplace of the Futureheads and Franz Ferdinand’s Alex Kapranos — this band recently committed treason in their hometown by declaring that indie rock “makes us sick.” To be fair, they’ve always preferred ELO to guitar bands, and they’re suckers for a lovely melody. On Field Music (Measure), they lace their multilayered pop with proggy instrumentation and complicated harmonies. The ambition’s epic, but with time signatures constantly shifting, it’s hard to get into the groove. Recommended for fans of XTC, not for those with ADD. B?
