Laptop-wielding Brits don’t often become Kings of Soul. But when Hot Chip fuse ? gospel, funk, and R&B with catchy electro, their music feels as warm and expressive as any Stax classic. On their latest, One Life Stand, frontman Joe Goddard sings like a shy choirboy about love, alley cats, and playing Xbox with his brother. And the cold techno pulse complements his heartfelt vocals: The album’s so emo, it comes with its own heartbeat. B+
