Michael Ian Black promotes new children's book with PG-13 'making of' video

Who knows if it will translate in sales, but you’ve got to hand it to Michael Ian Black for shrewdly marketing to parents with a twisted sense of humor. The author of the children’s book Chicken Cheeks has returned with The Purple Kangaroo, on shelves now, and he’s shot a “making of” video that shows the collaborative process between himself and his illustrator, Peter Brown. “Here’s the thing, I really feel like the kangaroo needs to have just a little bit of sex appeal,” he says while posing for Brown wearing kangaroo ears and encouraging him to draw the titular character with his legs behind his head. I’m not sure how you read this book to your child with a straight face after seeing that. Perhaps that’s the point?
