With a global haul of $1.098 billion, James Cameron’s Avatar has jumped past The Dark Knight ($1.0 billion) and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest ($1.066 billion) to to become the third-biggest moneymaker in Hollywood history. The sci-fi epic will almost certainly dethrone Lord of the Rings: Return of the King (number two of all time, $1.119 billion) in the weeks to come, although box office analysts are still uncertain whether Avatar has a shot at surpassing the current record holder, Titanic ($1.842 billion).
