- Depp Perception
- Thank you for making Johnny Depp one of your Entertainers of the Decade (#1079/1080). The unexpected bonus was two pages of his heartfelt, articulate ”essentials,” which highlighted underrated artists. By allowing him to write about others, you revealed far more about this intensely private man than any interview would have.

Not Feelin’ It
Your Best of the Decade issue sucked. Tina Fey isn’t funny, Oprah is simply annoying, and The Lord of the Rings is not the decade’s best film. That honor should’ve gone to the hugely entertaining Hairspray, which had great music, an appealing cast, and a dancing Christopher Walken.

The editors respond: Hey, Tim. Let’s agree to agree — on Christopher Walken’s dancing.
Miss Congeniality
When I tell my movie-snob friends that Sandra Bullock is among the most engaging actors out there, I usually hear a dismissive snort (#1081). But the proof is on display in Crash, and with her 2009 box office record, I’d love to see what directors like Lynch and Fincher could do with her chops.

Cautionary Tale
Props to Peter Jackson for sheltering his cast, crew, and audience from the brutality of Susie’s death in The Lovely Bones (News & Notes, #1081). Emphasizing the theme of mourning, not victimhood, supports the novel’s tone. Once again, he’s earned my respect.

- Technogeeks Unite!
- One reason for the number of DVR’d sci-fi shows (#1081) is that geeks often work odd hours. My Whedonite roommate and I work graveyard. Our DVR has given us back the ability to watch awesome prime time together.

The’00S: Rest of the Best
It was a dynamic decade, to be sure, but we would’ve needed multiple editions to cram in all the talent. Readers lobbied hard for the high-profile names and projects that deserved a moment of glory.
Hugh Jackman
”He was the breakout star of X-Men, hosted the Tonys three years in a row, and was the first Oscar host in recent memory who was a real entertainer.”
— Ellen Dweck, East Brunswick, N.J.
The Office (U.S. Version)
”The BBC version is brilliant, but why is it either/or? Dwangela and ‘That’s what she said’ are as iconic as Ross and Rachel and ‘Whatchoo talkin’ ’bout, Willis?”’
— Brigette Thornes, Lansing, Mich.
Howard Stern
”What other comedian does 20 hours of new material almost every week? And is there another person who could get millions to subscribe to satellite radio?”
— Lenny Freed, Lyndhurst, Ohio
Joss Whedon
”Over 10 years, he’s helmed four series, helped revitalize comics with Astonishing X-Men, and shifted the paradigm for viral-video success with Dr. Horrible.”
— Aarrun Marcus, Aurora, Colo.
Heath Ledger
”He showed his range as the deeply repressed Ennis Del Mar and the unforgiving Joker. A man should be remembered for how he lived, not his death.”
— M. Smith, Kelowna, B.C.
Battlestar Galactica
”What the frak, EW?! You can’t mention what was perhaps the best sci-fi series we’ve seen since the original Star Trek? For shame!”
— Shannon Nutt, Pittsburgh
