Richard and Mayumi Heene — a.k.a. the parents of Balloon Boy, whose elaborate hoax briefly dominated the news this fall — have both been ordered to spend time in jail, and have been banned from receiving any financial benefit (such as a book deal) from the scandal. Richard was ordered to serve 90 days — 30 in custody and 60 in a work-release program — on one felony charge of attempting to influence a public official; Mayumi, who plead guilty of making a false report to law enforcement, will serve 20 days. The couple was also placed on four years’ probation. A restitution fine will be considered later.
