For some, Animal Collective are the next Grateful Dead: psychedelic improvisers whose expert chooglin’ has earned near-religious devotion from long-haired fans. So when this five-song EP breaks into a sample from the Dead’s ”Unbroken Chain” — the first such use ever approved by the band — on ”What Would I Want? Sky” it’s a perfect circle. Somewhere between AC’s tribal rhythms and Phil Lesh’s mellifluous vocals is the sound of a generation gap closing. Everything else on Fall Be Kind, from the revelatory drone of ”Bleed” to the fractalized synths of ”I Think I Can,” just feels brand-new. A
