Rebooting the mothballed Star Trek franchise was never the no-win scenario (”Kobayashi Maru,” for the nerd herd) that J.J. Abrams & Co. describe on this two-disc set’s back-patting commentary. After all, fans already ate up Next Generation and Deep Space Nine. Still, Abrams’ turn at the helm of the Enterprise is a triumph. Star Trek is exciting, the cast is terrific, and the cameo by Leonard Nimoy is done with both love and smarts. If there’s a nit to pick, it’s Eric Bana’s villain, Nero. He’s no Khan. A bounty of EXTRAS includes outtakes and cool deleted scenes like Spock’s birth. The only thing missing is a drool bib. A-
