The Weekly World News has signed on for Hollywood representation to license out its “characters” (think Bat Boy) and develop a TV project, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The former supermarket tabloid (now online-only) boasts more than 30 creations that could now become film or television properties, and Dreamworks is the first in line to develop a TV show based on some of its thousands of bizarre tales about Elvis sightings, conspiracies, aliens, Bigfoot, and the like. CEO Neil McGinness is looking to revive the offbeat brand in its 30th anniversary year. It’s not yet clear which characters the series will focus on or whether it will be live-action or animated, though it’s likely to skew from the faux-news format of the short-lived ’90s show based on the tabloid.
