Toronto 2009: EW, Oprah and Mary J. Blige help Tyler Perry celebrate his 40th birthday
It was a good weekend to be Tyler Perry. Not only did his latest movie, I Can Do Bad All By Myself, take the No. 1 spot at the box office, but yesterday, he celebrated his 40th birthday like any self-respecting mogul should — with Entertainment Weekly and Oprah!
Last night, EW hosted a dinner here in Toronto to celebrate Lee Daniels’ Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire, the buzz-buzz-buzzed-about indie drama that Perry and Oprah exec-produced (and is certain to be a contender in this year’s Oscar race). Both titans of the entertainment world attended the party, as did Daniels, Sapphire, Precious stars Sherri Shepherd, Paula Patton (plus hubbie Robin Thicke), and Gabourey (“Gabby”) Sidibe, along with Mary J. Blige, who appears in I Can Do Bad and contributed a song to the Precious soundtrack. After Oprah and Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer led toasts in Perry’s honor, Blige rose from her table and delivered a heartfelt, impromptu rendition of “Happy Birthday.” Even Oprah was impressed.
Then they rolled out the cake and we sipped champagne.
So… who’d you like to sing at your next milestone birthday?
