STARRING Michael Angarano, Jemaine Clement, Sam Rockwell, Jennifer Coolidge
WRITTEN BY Jared Hess, Jerusha Hess
DIRECTED BY Jared Hess
Like his 2004 breakout Napoleon Dynamite, director Jared Hess’ new comedy stars a teenage outcast. This time, it’s a science-fiction fan (The Forbidden Kingdom‘s Michael Angarano) who submits a fantasy novel to a contest — only to have his concept stolen, reimagined, and published by a deluded, washed-up author named Ronald Chevalier (Jemaine Clement from Flight of the Conchords). And then things get confusing: The film features fantasy sequences that reveal both versions of the novel. ”It’s pretty bonkers,” says Hess, who co-wrote the film with his wife and writing partner, Jerusha. ”And Jemaine kind of nails it in the film.” Hess was so impressed that he amped up Clement’s role, handing him scenes originally intended for other characters. Do we see ”Vote for Chevalier” T-shirts in his future?
