Andy Kessler, a star of New York’s skateboarding scene in the 1970s and beloved figure in national skate culture, passed away August 10 at age 48 from a heart attack following an allergic reaction to a wasp sting in Montauk, New York, according to the Associated Press.

Last year, Kessler appeared in the documentary From Deathbowl to Downtown: The Evolution of Skateboarding in New York, which will be released on DVD September 15. At the time of his death, Kessler was reportedly working on improvements for a skate park he designed in Montauk.
