The Garden was a ?14-acre community-tilled plot of land in South Central Los Angeles where poor Latino immigrants grew bananas and melons amid asphalt and cement. It also ?became a metaphor ? for their loss of Edenic innocence. The Garden, an Oscar-nominated documentary, captures the tragic David-and-Goliath struggle between the powerless (aided by boosters like Daryl Hannah) and a deaf legal system, but it also fails to answer some of the questions it raises.
