When she auditioned to play a high school rocker in Bandslam, Hudgens didn’t take the singing requirement too seriously. ”I was like, ‘Whatever, they can watch High School Musical,”’ she says. ”I come in, do my scene, and they were like, ‘Now you need to sing.’ I was like, ‘Crap.”’ Hudgens quickly looked over some sheet music in the room, then handed the pianist her choice: Amy Winehouse’s ”Rehab.” ”It was definitely different than ‘Breaking Free,”’ says Hudgens, referring to one of HSM‘s squeaky-clean hits. It turns out director/co-writer Graff (Camp) wanted a Winehouse sort of edge. Newcomer Connell plays an indie music geek who’s enlisted by his new high school’s hottest rocker chick (Michalka) to whip her fledgling band into shape. Graff only cast kids who could play instruments on camera — which meant that Hudgens had to learn the guitar. ”I had calluses on my fingers at the end,” she says.
