Welcome to Extended Play, an occasional feature here on the Music Mix intended to give you a chance to read even more reviews of what’s coming out this week, so you can be a better-informed listener and also wow your friends. We are nothing if not in favor of you enhancing your social life.

This week, Brooke White, High Hopes and Heartbreak.

Brooke White

High Hopes & Heartbreak

Pop (June Baby)

No one who saw White sing “You’ve Got a Friend” on Season 7 of American Idol will be surprised by the Carole King-ish piano-pop tunes on her post-Idol debut. Additionally, no one who’s heard a song sung in the English language will be shocked by White’s lyrics, which tend toward shopworn ruminations such as “everybody makes mistakes.” High Hopes & Heartbreak does contain one unexpected highlight, though: White’s lovely soul-folk take on Kings of Leon’s “Use Somebody.” Karaoke it ain’t.
