Roman Polanski’s first English-language film is still a creepy little horror masterpiece. And thanks to the Criterion ? Collection’s new digital face-lift, it’s never looked better or more crisp. Catherine Deneuve, only 21 at the time and arguably the most beautiful woman on the planet, plays Carol, a fragile flower who shares a London flat with her sister (Yvonne Furneaux). Left alone for a week, she slowly ? unravels?haunted by strange noises, hallucinations, and walls of grasping hands pawing at her. Three years later, Polanski would direct another picture about a mousy beauty’s crack-up (Rosemary’s Baby), which, come to think of it, would make the perfect second half of a double feature.
