Oscar-winning Milk screenwriter Dustin Lance Black, an outspoken advocate of LGBT rights and safe sex, has released a statement after sexually explicit photos that appear to depict him having unprotected sex hit the Internet yesterday. The photos are reportedly for sale, and a video is said to exist as well. In a statement released to E! Online’s Marc Malkin, Black said: “It is unfortunate that individuals and other outside parties are trying to profit from material which is clearly private. I have had the privilege to speak to people across the country, both gay and straight, on a number of critical issues including safe sex. More important than the embarrassment of this incident is the misleading message these images send. I apologize and cannot emphasize enough the importance of responsible sexual practices.”

Malkin says a source told him the other man in the three-year-old photos is someone Black was dating. Black’s lawyers are said to be seeking legal action.
