'Star Trek': Thoughts from a non-fan
I am about the farthest thing from a sci-fi fan as you can get. I’ve never watched a full episode of Star Trek, and I’ve only seen one of the 10 previous Trek films (The Wrath of Khan, with that freaky critter-in-the-ear scene that scared the crap out of the 9-year-old me). So I went into a screening of the film recently not really knowing what to expect. And I loved it. It’s exciting, it’s emotional, and unlike so many summer popcorn movies these days, it makes sense. I’ll leave it to the official EW review to give you the details, but I thought the breezy, star-making performance of Chris Pine as Captain Kirk (pictured) actually reminded me of a great Indiana Jones film, in a strange way. I guess it makes sense, seeing as the film is directed by J.J. Abrams, who has admitted he wasn’t a huge Trek guy either.
It may not have the biggest opening weekend ever, but once it hits theaters this Friday, Star Trek is without a doubt going to be a movie that fans and non-fans will love equally, and I have a feeling as far as overall box office is concerned, it’s going to leave Wolverine in the dust.
For those of you who typically don’t care about Star Trek, will you still be lining up forthe movie this weekend?
