Steve Wiebe's E3 attempt at 'Donkey Kong' record will be televised. Discuss.
Steve Wiebe, the underdog we all rooted for in the 2007 documentary The King of Kong: A Fist Full of Quarters, will attempt to win back his title of top-scorer on Donkey Kong from
evil gaming legend Billy Mitchell at the 2009 Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) on June 2. G4 will cover the event live.
Now, The King of Kong was one of my favorite films of 2007. (If you haven’t seen it, rent it.) I liked it so much, in fact, that I interviewed Wiebe and went to see him play live in Times Square. Not as exciting as it sounds, folks. Watching the movie, I’d been air-boxing and talking back to the screen; watching an unedited game in-person, I was like, Why is he the only one who gets a chair?
So, are you die-hard gamers hoping that G4 airs Wiebe’s attempt in its entirety? Or, are you hoping they check in on him every now and then, then stay with him as the record and/or kill screen approaches?
