The Countess of 'Real Housewives': What does LuAnn de Lesseps' divorce means for the show?
As the New York Post‘s Page Six reported this morning, The Real Housewives of New York City‘s Countess LuAnn de Lesseps is separating from her husband, Count de Lesseps. A divorce is the next logical step. (Ohmigod, will she still be able to demand to be called “The Countess”?) And it’s no surprise, really. The unrest in their marriage makes sense, seeing as how the Count was never with the Countess on the show.
And that fact only seems to corroborate what sources told the Post: Supposedly, trouble had been brewing betweenthe pair for a while, and they finally decided to call it quits when shediscovered he was seeing an Ethiopian woman in Geneva. Sadly, theCountess received the news from the Count via email. (I’d love to hear what the Etiquette Queen would have to say about that break-up method! Not very nice!)
Could we have seen this coming from what has been on screen in The Real Housewives? Probably. The season thus far has touched on the Countess’ marriage quite a bit: First, Ramona and the Countess had a “huge” blowout after Ramona said her husband was old. Then, the Countess went off on the Count after he missed their daughter’s equestrian event. Factoring in this drama, what was happening on the show actually seems like it could reflect what’s going on in real life (for a change).
Of course, the big question now is, will the Countess be back for a third season? (The second season, which is airing Tuesdays at 10 p.m. on Bravo, is already in the can.) According to a Bravo publicist, a third season of the show hasn’t even been greenlit yet, and “no decisions have been made” about anything. It’s likely, however, that if the show gets a season 3 pick-up (and with its growing ratings, it likely will), the Countess will return. As a precedent, The Real Housewives of Orange County‘s Jeana was allowed to stay after her divorce. And so should LuAnn: There’s no question that the show needs the Countess for her sheer delusion and fabulousity.
And really, this could only be good for future storylines. Earlier this season, we got a (rather ridiculous) preview of what the Countess would be like on a date when she doled out her gems of courting advice to Bethenny on a lunch date. Mostly, she told Bethenny to “Let him be the man” (screw feminism!) and instructed her to lean in a lot during dinner dates and talk seductively. PopWatchers, is this what we could be in store for in season 3 when the Countess hits the town? More of her stilted dating?
