Grammy style

Taylor Swift
From her elegant Kaufman Franco gown, with a patent-leather twist, to her Lorraine Schwartz diamonds, the 19-year-old surprised with the most sophisticated look of the night. A

Jennifer Hudson
Bringing an original note to the red carpet, the first-time Grammy winner looked her sharpest in an intricately pleated, three-toned RM by Roland Mouret cocktail dress. A

Sara Bareilles
Her bubble-gum confection, courtesy of Luisa Beccaria, verges on sugar overload — but the bold tomato-red accents put the ”Love Song” singer on the right side of sweet. B+

Carrie Underwood
Golden, glitzy, and fitted like a glove: It’s not an unexpected look for the country crooner, but on a night of truly wacky fashions, we’re giving the girl props for keeping it glam in Zuhair Murad. B

The Best New Artist’s sleek Barbara Tfank jacket brought the most gorgeous dose of color to the red carpet, even if the black circle-skirted number underneath was a bit of a snooze on its own. B

Katy Perry
We had high hopes for her pale pink, perfectly fitted, exquisitely woven gown from behind…and then she turned around. Welcome, ladies and gents, to Night of the Killer Corsages. C+

Gwyneth Paltrow
Mrs. Coldplay got points for rocking out in metallic Versace, but a micro-mini is meant to flaunt your eight miles of legs — not to hide them under dreary gray support hose. C

Zooey Deschanel
Chalk this one up as another victim of the corsage spree of ’09. Besides, it’s possible the She & Him crooner crafted her chiffon-and-brocade dress entirely from her living-room upholstery. D+

Did the ”American Boy” diva get one bolt of Mylar to construct her entire outfit? From the Judy Jetson dress to the, ahem, peep-toe boots, the Brit looks like she’s poised to take off…into space. D-

Paula Abdul
We wouldn’t have minded the egg-yolk-yellow gown so terribly on its own — if only the Idol judge hadn’t rolled around in Party City streamers before hitting the red carpet. F
