After two weeks of relentless controversy over Jessica Simpson’s smidge of purported weight gain — heck, even our president was apprised of the sitch amidst concerns like, um, the collapse of American life as we know it — the poor girl is (understandably) showing signs of wear and tear. She apparently struggled through a trouble-plagued performance in Michigan last night, forgetting lyrics and choking up. Now, as far as we’re concerned, she’s come out ahead in this spate of “bad” publicity, eliciting an outpouring of support from close to home (sis Ashlee Simpson-Wentz and ex Nick Lachey) as well as across showbiz (Heidi Klum, Kim Kardashian, the ladies of The View). She’s got a knack for emerging likable and triumphant from highly publicized personal issues, whether it’s her less-than-informed comments about fish vs. tuna or her split with Lachey. It’s a talent first discovered when she and Lachey taped their little MTV reality show-turned-surprise-smash Newlyweds. But the allure of dissecting Simpson’s foibles has only grown since then, even as her box office draw and record sales have been hit and miss — perhaps making her a bit of a cautionary tale for opening up one’s personal life for public consumption.

The overwhelming ruckus caused by this latest weight debate proves she’s an attention magnet of a magnitude we hadn’t truly grasped — and perhaps neither had she. Now can we all get back to worrying about the economy and let Simpson get on with her day job already? You know, the one where she sings for our enjoyment?

What do you think? Have you had enough of the Jessica Simpson talk? Does she deserve to be left alone now?
