“The more you talked, the more I said, ‘This guy’s guilty,'” David Letterman said to Rod Blagojevich last night. Before the disgraced governor came out, Letterman said, “For the life of me, I have no idea why this guy’s here.” It was prime Letterman: commenting on a media phenomenon–in this case, Blagojevich’s media blitz on tons of news and talk show–while contributing to the media phenomenon by having Blago on for three segments.

During which Letterman hammered at the hairy ex-gov’s incessant repetitions about his legal rights having been denied, filleting the politician quite adroitly. “I’m glad you’re not gonna sit on the jury in Illinois,” said a slightly rattled Blagojevich. Letterman gave him a final, fine back-handed compliment: “Just in terms of filling time, you’ve been tremendous,” Letterman said.
