Yes, The Agency is a genre novel — ”saucy lady” pink-foil cover and all. Still,? this debut from the pseudonymous Ally O’Brien (actually a suspense novelist and media agent writing? together) is pretty snappy all the same. Heroine Tess Drake, equal parts Ari Gold and Sherlock Holmes in a slit-?to-there skirt, is a London literary agent trying to sort out her tangled love life and her boss’ suspicious death while juggling a passel of unruly clients. Nothing’s very subtle — ?foreshadowing comes on like a team of Clydesdales at a tea party — but Tess’ breezy wit eclipses the flat-footed attempts of the many CosmoGirl-come-latelies who’ve preceded her.
