If Ricky Gervais hosted the Oscars, would you have a laugh?
As Hollywood Insider reported this week, the Academy could be courting Ricky Gervais to host the 2009 Oscars telecast. He’s got movies out (Ghost Town) and in the works (This Side of Truth, costarring Tina Fey), and his off-script “Give me back my Emmy” exchange with Steve Carell marked one of the few bright spots of this year’s Emmys. Gervais justified his going wildly off-script with typically self-effacing reasoning: “I’ve got nothing to lose here — I’m a nobody here.” Hardly, but someone relatively unconsumed by the Hollywood bubble — and not afraid to pop that shizz — could make Oscar night an unpredictable, brilliantly subversive mess.
