In 1994, Murphy Brown creator English wrote a draft of The Women, a remake of George Cukor’s 1939 classic. The intended stars: Ryan and Julia Roberts. Fourteen years and about a zillion script and cast changes later, the update is finally done. Roberts is long gone, but Ryan remains, playing a rich socialite who discovers her husband is cheating on her with a younger woman (Mendes). Though faithful to the original, the new version is less catty. “It’s a story about female friendship,” says Ryan.
OUR TWO CENTS Mendes in the Joan Crawford role? Really? Still, Picturehouse is hoping that marketing these Women directly to Sex and the City fans will prove as powerful as a Jungle Red manicure. 9/12
