In Richard E. Hughes’ Herbie Archives, Vol. One, rotund, bespectacled Herbie Popnecker is described by his father as ”that fat little nothing.” But with the help of powerful lollipops (anti-gravity, time travel, etc.), he’s able to tackle Satan and Khrushchev, and earn the respect of JFK and LBJ (and the amorous attentions of Jackie O. and Lady Bird). He also freights a sly critique of suburban homogeneity: Herbie’s pipe-smoking dad so wants his son to be like all the other kids, he never appreciates that Herbie’s saving the world. A-
