A pseudo-feminist fable for the fanboy set, TNT’s short-lived Witchblade — about NYC detective Sara Pezzini’s superheroic quest to vanquish Empire State perps — straddles a thin line between genuine female empowerment and cartoonish exploitation. With her husky voice and titular weapon in hand, Butler brings world-weary gravity to fluffy story lines — Sara avenges the deaths of supermodels — and sub-Matrix dialogue. The show is, however, tamer than its origins: Two making-of docs show that the Witchblade comic sexualizes Sara far more than the TV series. C+
