Bustin' Down the Door

Bustin' Down the Door

In the mid-1970s, a handful of young Australian and South African surfers arrived in Hawaii and revolutionized the sport with their aggressive wave-catching moves. The brash Aussies also ruffled local feathers so badly that a couple were physically attacked and, Jeremy Gosch’s doc alleges, had contracts taken out on their lives. This Edward Norton-narrated film Bustin’ Down the Door about that surf invasion — and subsequent backlash — boasts thrilling action footage and riveting subjects. Particularly unforgettable is Eddie Rothman, cofounder of the notorious Hawaiian surfer gang Da Hui and probably the scariest dude ever interviewed while wearing beach shorts. B+
